Cathing Update

Well, our fabulous nurses Deanna and Shelly finally got a catheter in!!! It took a LONG time. And Owen was soo patient. A real trooper. When they finally got it it was with a coude (which is a catheter with a curved and pointed tip) so they dared to take it out and try for the kind that can stay in better. They finally got it. As unpleasant as this sounds, Shelly had to help guide it past the false passage with a finger via his rectum. He did great.

So yes, he did have a false passage. They said it can happen gradually, like digging a hole. You get hung up at a certain point and try again and get through, but the next time you get hung up again. And each time it slowly makes a bigger and bigger "cubbie" for the catheter to get stuck in. So Eric was just the unlucky guy to be the one doing it when it finally pushed through into the bladder. (I hope that makes sense) Could have happened to anyone and totally, not his fault. Sometimes it just has to do with the anatomy.

Anyway, We just had lunch and had a few minutes before opthomology. So he has a "permanent" catheter in right now, held in by a balloon in the bladder and taped to his tummy. (He doesn't have to wear the "contraption" though Kim) We just double diapered him. Which means the first diaper is for the poop and then we put the end of the catheter into the outer second diaper for the pee. So Owen has quite the bidonkidonk butt right now. It will stay in for one week. That should give it enough time to heal up.

-Our friends the Wilhelms and little Brandon JUST went through this so I kind of knew what to expect.

- We don't have to have the contraption for the urine!

- Owen is so content and patient through it all

- and I was remarkably calm through it all as well.
